Before getting started, as you'll recall, <a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2014/01/words-to-live-by-2014.html">2014 marked a pretty big change with respect to racing</a>, as I decided not to renew my USAT Elite license. Basically, I wanted to take a step back from training and racing in order to let other aspects of my life take up more of the extra time. Looking back, it appears I achieved that on the training front, but still raced a ton! So, here is where we stand:</div>

The season started off a little slow at Little Rock due to a late start after the Rocket City Marathon at the end of 2013. But with my focus firmly set on Gulf Coast, I had, in retrospect, a string of pretty decent races. The Heel and Crank / Bridge Street Half double was tortuous, and probably not the best idea for being competitive for the rest of the season, but it was a cool challenge at the time, and I got a mug out of it! I was pleasantly surprised with my times at the HTC Scholarship 8k and Cookie Dash 5k, and then really pleased with my performance at Gulf Coast. That was really the one race I was targeting in the spring, so it was nice to have a really solid performance there and win by almost 10 minutes despite a cancelled swim (which was a HUGE bummer!) Sure, my performance wasn't as great as my previous best 70.3 performances, but it was still good enough for a solid 'W'.<br />

From there, the summer was unplanned, but I ended up still racing quite a bit (but training even less) Mach Tenn was a race I had never done before (no prize money) but signed up on a whim, had an awesome race, and won. In addition to being an awesome distance (800m/16mi/4mi), the post race food was top notch! Fresh corn cakes and beans, beer, and all the other standard post race fair. And, it was just a few miles from Lynchburg, TN, and Jack Daniels' distillery, so there was a little bonus trip on the way home. </div>

After Mach Tenn it was time for the local trio of races - Racing Rivals, Huntsville Sprint, and Rocketman. I was hesitant about Rocketman because it wasnt in my (tentative) plan at the beginning of the season, but when my friend from college told me he had registered, I knew I had to join him. In the end <a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2014/09/rocketman-rr.html">it went really well</a> and I was able to put together a strong swim (thanks Bruce!) and strong bike (thanks Trek!) to mask an astonishingly mediocre run and hold on for a healthy win over a pretty strong field.<br />

From there all sights were set on Swim Hobbs Island, a 5 mile swim in the Tennessee River around, you guessed it, Hobbs Island. This was another race I was peer pressured into (thanks Suz and Suz!). Thankfully the competition for this first year race wasn't epic so I was able to come away with a pretty easy win. Really though, it was cool to swim 5 miles! Not having swum as a kid, that was definitely the furthest I had swum in one workout. I'm not sure I'd want to go much further, but I do really enjoy open water swimming.<br />

After the swim I tried to turn things right around and get in shape for the fall's annual running races. This, unfortunately, is where things started to unravel. I managed to pull out a decent performance in the Army Ten Miler and continued pressing, hoping I could get (back) into shape for the Rocket City Marathon in December. However, by late October my hamstring had had enough and any hopes of a fast run at RCM were out of the picture.</div>

Looking back, my training was fairly consistent in the spring, but horribly inconsistent over the summer. That, combined with my frequent racing, meant I was toasted to a crisp by the fall. I was able to fake my way through late summer races with good swims and bikes, but it was apparent my run was just not up to par and just hanging by a thread. The nail in the marathon's coffin, then, were Rocketman and Swim Hobbs Island - training for these caused my RCM training to be delayed, then rushed, then ultimately doomed. Retrospectively though, that was fine, because Rocketman and Swim Hobbs were both awesome events, and there are plenty of marathons ahead... like Boston! And, "other life stuff" is going really well, so mission accomplished. </div>

So yeah, I'm registered for Boston 2015 and look forward to the experience. I may be getting too old to set any PRs, but if I can stay healthy I'm still hoping to run reasonably well. From there I should have plenty to prep for the annual series of late summer and fall races. Should be fun!</div>

(OK - the swim was cancelled at Gulf Coast, but come on...)<br />

Up until Saturday I still wasnt sure if I was going to race on Sunday. I had signed up late for this one mainly because my buddy Philip was driving up from Birmingham and coming out of retirement for the occasion, but suddenly I realized that maybe that wasnt the best reason to enter an Olympic distance triathlon. And then there were the races the previous two weekends which, although I won, felt a lot harder than they needed to. In the end though, I had made a commitment to the race director, Mike Gerrity, so I figured I give it a shot. Worst case it would give me some good practice swimming in the Tennessee River for the upcoming <a href="https://www.facebook.com/SwimHobbsIsland">Hobbs Island 5 mile swim</a>.<br />

For the last couple of years Mike, after some prodding from me, introduced an "open" wave. This allows anyone who actually wants to race for the overall win to start first in a mass start. Needless to say, this is so much better than the nonsense time trial starts most "races" around here employ. This year there were eight in the wave. Small, but probably sufficient to tease out the winner. They included the usual suspects like Dr. John Krichev and Bruce "The Legend" Gennari, as well as a few out of towners like Nick Vandam. There were also plenty of potentially dangerous college kids.<br />
<br />
For the swim, though, most of this didnt matter. I knew there was one place I needed to be - on Bruce's (huge) feet. My strategy for the race was simple - stay with Bruce as long as possible in the swim, ride my Speed Concept as hard as I could, and then hold on for dear life on the run. I figured if I could come off the bike with a lead, no one would notice my lack of run fitness.<br />
<br />
When the gun went off, I took off as well. Pretty soon Bruce began to ease away and I found myself fighting Nick for his feet. Soon though it seemed Nick fell back and I was in prime location. I was swimming fast for sure, but thankfully not losing any ground. By the first buoy at ~500 yds, I could tell we had a gap on the field. I successfully stayed with Bruce through the second turn as well, and from then on I just kept my head down and stayed focused. Bruce is a BOSS and even swimming behind him is difficult. But, I knew it would be worth it because if it was hard for me to <i>draft</i> I knew no one else would be close.<br />

Out of the water it was mission accomplished - I was right on Bruce's heels. [Swim time: 18:42] Through transition he still had a bit of a gap, but once we were riding I got my shoes on a little quicker than him and pushed ahead. I figured he'd hang with me, if not pass and pull away. But, neither happened. A quick check back when we were around 5 miles in showed that a pretty nice gap had actually formed. More importantly, I still couldnt see anyone else. Continuing to push, I wanted to have as big a lead as possible by the turn around at around mile 14.<br />

At the turn around life was good. By my calculations I had a 3+ min lead on Bruce and Dr. Krichev who had almost caught Bruce. From there I wanted to keep pressing to exploit my super fast Speed Concept and not have to worry about racing anyone on the run. In years past this much of a lead wouldve meant the race was over, but I knew my run wouldnt be up to par, so I wanted to make sure I still had a cushion off the bike. And, I had no idea how far back out of the water the others started.<br />

Off the bike, I knew I had a nice lead, but had no idea how much. I did feel good that I didnt even hear anyone coming into transition after I had left, but I knew I'd be in for a painful run. First mile: 6:10. Even over trails and a slimy boardwalk, this was pretty bad. The course only got worse from there so I just stopped looking at my watch. This run was a total sufferfest, for sure, as there were parts on hilly pothole-filled, gravel covered dirt roads where I really wasnt even sure if I was moving forward. But, everyone had to run the same course, so I got into half-IM survival mode and just kept moving forward.<br />

FINALLY we were out on some actual asphalt and I felt like I was almost running. The big test, I knew, would come at the turnaround at mile 4, as I'd be able to get a time split. Immediately after the turn, I saw a group running towards me and started to freak. Thankfully though it wasnt fellow racers - just a group of friends running along the course to cheer. Whew! Finally I saw the Good Doctor and he was over 4min back. Although I wasnt running fast I knew that with less than 2 miles to go there was no way he'd be able to make up that gap as long as I kept moving forward.<br />

annual Gulf Coast Triathlon. However, with this being the only half IM I
had signed up for this year, I also was looking forward to the race, even if I knew
I hadn’t been really “training”, but more just kind of “exercising”. Or, for
the cyclists, living the full Fred lifestyle.</span><br />

prior to the race was filled with its usual anxiety, but by the time the alarm
went off on Saturday morning, I was ready to go. There was some concern about
the weather, but as the sun began to rise while we went through the pre-race
motions, it appeared any impending doom would remain at bay. Before I knew it,
transition was closing, and we were all headed to the beach for an on-time
start. This held right up until… the start time. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">The first
wave was supposed to enter the water at 6:20, while I was slotted to start with
the other 30-34 y/o males at 6:45. However, 6:20 came and went with folks still
standing on the beach. Then all of the sudden kayaks started heading back to
shore – not what you want to see if you’re hoping to swim. A few minutes later
people started herding together and we were told that for the first time in the
32(!) year history of the event, there would be no swimming. Needless to say,
this was a major letdown, and I was about ready to just skip the race and play
in the waves. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

of the swim there was a TT start into a short beach run. I made the mistake of
taking off my wetsuit too early and stood wet and shivering. Not ideal. Finally

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";">Heading out
with the tailwind was great, but I was having a hard time dialing in my effort
level after standing around on the beach for so long. I was hoping to get
splits every 5mi with the goal of staying under 13min per. This would put me on
pace for a 2:20 which, given my recent (lack of) training, I would’ve been pretty
happy with. Unfortunately there were only markers every 10mi, but when the
first one came just under 23min into the ride, I was feeling pretty good. Although
I was happy to have put time in the bank, I knew the first 5mi included a
pretty healthy tailwind which would be no fun on the return trip. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

a BRO rode up on me, and I decided it was time to start racing. If I was going
to be doing this, I might as well get it over with as quickly as possible. A couple
of others joined us, and we slowly made our way through the field. (I am happy
to report we saw multiple officials along the way, and multiple penalties were dispensed.)

made the turn back south our split from mile 30 to 40 slowed, but was still
under 25min, so I was pleased. However, I was also starting to get some major
tightness in my gluts and hamstrings, likely due to the combination of lack of
training and recent switch to longer cranks. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

five miles were straight into a headwind and no fun at all, but I managed to
hold it together for a solid 2h17 ride. Needless to say, the new <a href="http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/triathlon/speed_concept_7_series/">Trek SpeedConcept</a> is pretty awesome. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

feel great starting the run, but I’ve also certainly felt worse. My first
thought was that I sure was glad I only had to do it once! (IMFL is the same
course twice.) I quickly left the BROs I had been riding with and set out to
catch others up the road, specifically ladies and M25-29. First mile was 5:47,
and as long I was running under 6min pace, I was happy. I cruised along feeling
decent and trying to enjoy the day. I also knew it was all (figuratively) all downhill
once I left the park. At the turn, I only saw three guys (all 25-29) ahead of
me, but had no idea whether I was virtually in the lead or not. Once I left the
park I was keeping the pace in the 6:0xish range and feeling pretty good
(considering), but ready to be done. 10-11 was pretty rough, but by the time I reached
mile 12 it was all good, as I was pretty confident I’d get under 1h20, my rough
goal for this race. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

I finished in 1h19, and after a brief conversation with the 3 guys who crossed
the line ahead of me, I was pretty confident I’d finished with the fastest

certainly bummed about the canceled swim, I was really pleased with the end result.
I had been wanting to race here since 2003ish but due to scheduling conflicts
had never been able to make it. So, it was really nice to be able to enjoy the
day and have a decent result. And, there was free beer immediately after the
race AND at the post race party that evening. What more could you want? <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Saturday was the Heel & Crank Duathlon, while Sunday was the inaugural Bridge Street Half Marathon. I had committed to the Heel & Crank a couple of months before the half was announced, so when I heard about it, I didnt really think twice about racing it. Duathlons are hard, after all, and two hard 3 mile runs on Saturday would be enough hard running for the weekend. Additionally, the risk of injuring myself with that much hard running, and missing out on quality bike training time would have, in the past, been unthinkable. However, this is <a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2014/01/words-to-live-by-2014.html">2014</a>, so when it was announced that anyone doing both would be eligible for a commemorative pint glass, well then I just had to sign up for the half as well! </span><br />

</span> <span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Saturday morning, then, started off with a trip to the pool, because what good triathlete wouldnt swim before a duathlon? </span><br />

</span> At the race, I was my usual mix of worried but confident. Worried I wouldnt win, but confident in my abilities. Heading off for the first run, I felt pretty good and it seemed no one wanted to run with me, so I did my own thing. Plus, I wanted to make sure I had some time on the stronger cyclists in the field. At the turnaround of the first run, it looked like I had about a 30s lead - decent but not great. Finished run #1 in 16:07.<br />

Out on the bike, I felt surprisingly good. I didnt have a computer, but felt like I was moving pretty quickly. The thought was to just make it to 20min, or 8mi, without being caught. That is over halfway, and if I got caught and lost time, I shouldve be able to make it up in run #2. Luckily, I never got caught and rolled into T2 in first.<br />

All in all really pleased with the race, as I was faster in all three segments this year (20s faster in run 1, 1min faster on the bike, and 15s faster on the 2nd run). Some of that I think had to do with the weather, as it was pretty cold last year, but still, I'll take it! Sunday, however, was a different story. Of course I'd be sore, but I wasnt totally sure how my body would respond. At the start another local runner, Eric Debolt, said he was going for sub 1:15. So, I figured I'd try to stick with him for as long as possible and see what happened. That lasted about two miles before I started feeling a lot worse than I shouldve two miles into a half, so I had to back off the pace. Eventually I settled in around 5:55 pace, which seemed much more reasonable, but about all the legs had. There was also a brief stop between mile 10 and 11 - apparently the stomach didnt like the double races, either. This brought me to the finish solidly in third place, meaning the race the day before probably only cost me one place, because there was no way I was going to beat Josh Whitehead (he ran with Debolt before dropping a 9:4x last two miles...) <a href="http://bridgestreethalfmarathon.com/race-results/2014-race-results-all/">Results are here</a>. So, would I recommend this? No, not exactly. Will I do it again? No probably not. Was it a cool experience? For sure, especially because both races were in town, had great support, and were a lot of fun. And the crazy thing is that there were over 100 people that did both! So it was pretty cool to have the shared experience.<br />

But, there is a reason why you never see coaches prescribe two hard running workouts on back to back days... they take a lot out of you. I think it was a combination of muscle fatigue and glycogen depletion which led to the slower than usual performance on day two. Now I just need to take a few days really easy (no problems there...) and hope the weekend didnt take too much out of me, as I'd like a few more quality weeks of decent exercising before Gulf Coast.<br />

The seminal Nike slogan <a href="http://www.adweek.com/adfreak/happy-25th-birthday-nikes-just-do-it-last-great-advertising-slogan-150947">which turned 25 last summer</a> embodies my outlook on racing and training this year. Specifically, rather than limiting events and workouts only to those which will explicitly help improve my triathlon performance as I would've done in years past, I'm planning out branching out in order to seek out new and different experiences. This may lead to an EPIC FAIL in some races, but thats OK, as long as I'm having fun with friends along the way. </div>

So, to get the year started off right, I had my first "Just Do It" experience yesterday. The week before last I was informed our Masters swim group at the Huntsville Swim Association was going to do the USMS 1h Postal on the morning of Saturday the 18th. Normally I would've said, "No thanks" because the all out 1h effort would've left me pretty worn out and would've been detrimental to my ride later in the day. But as I found out most of the faster swimmers in town were going to participate, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to Just Do It. Who cares if I'd only been back in the pool for a couple of weeks? Regardless of outcome, it would be an awesome experience with friends.<br />
<br />
So going into the swim, I was hoping to swim 1:15/100 which would give me 4800 yards in an hour. I thought this was a relatively conservative goal, but given my lack of training wasn't totally sure of my fitness. I was also hoping the company would give me a little motivation to race, making me push a little harder. <br />
<br />
So the plan for Saturday was to get the pool a little after 5 for a 5:30 start. However we got in a little late, so I was only able to do a 600yd warm up. At the start I quickly settled into a rhythm and was surprised how good I felt. I was checking my splits every 400yds, and I was happy to see ~4:50 per 400, meaning I was ahead of pace. Still, Brandon, the guy I swim with, got off to a pretty solid start and probably built up about a 50yd lead over the first 500. He usually beats me in workouts, though, so I was trying not to worry too much about him.<br />

Continuing on, all of the sudden I noticed he was starting to falter a bit, and soon enough I was catching him. Somewhere towards the end of the second thousand, I made the pass and made sure to pick of the pace just a bit, topbut some added pressure on him. Sure enough, he broke and I continued to pour it on with no one else around. At this point I was leading and was just focusing on maintaining pace. As much as I could tell I was doing a pretty good job maintaining pace and Brandon was no where to be seen. This was great until the second half of the 4th thousand (when I was in the 70s for number of laps) at which point things started hurting and I felt like I started to lose focus a bit. Finally I got to 80 laps down, realized I had knocked out 4k and therefore only had at most 1k left. At that point I knew I was going to make 4800 so I started wondering how close I'd get to 5000. After passing lap 90, I knew I had to pick it up if I wanted to have any chance of getting there. Before the race we were told we'd see a red paddle at ~5min to go. So, after I passed 93 laps and still hadn't seen the red paddle, I thought I had a pretty good shot. I continued to press, and hit the wall at 98 down thinking I just needed to sprint the last 100 to get to 5000. Alas, as I headed to the wall to start my last lap, I was told time was up.<br />

In the end I made it 4925, which means I likely wouldve been around 61min for 5k. So, to get 5k in an hour, I wouldve had to go close to a second faster per 100. And, as it turns out my 500yd splits were pretty even: 6:03, 6:07, 6:06, 6:05, 6:03, 6:04, 6:08, 6:08, 6:09, ~6:07, so I'm not sure how much faster I could've gone.<br />

All in all, defintiely a fun morning, and a good story to share with friends. The best part was the Oatmeal Creme Pie I had waiting for me at the finish! (Guilty pleasure... dont judge!)<br />

After 6 years of racing as a "professional" triathlete, its time to call it quits. And by that, of course, I really mean I'll not be renewing my "Elite" USAT license for 2014.<br />

Naturally the first question I get when I tell people this is, "Why?" The easiest / smart ass answer is "I'm getting old". Its a smart ass answer because obviously there are plenty of professionals, in fact most of the top long course racers, who are over 30. So physical age really should not be an excuse.<br />
<br />
But, the real reason does have to do with getting old. But rather than the physical effects its really the psychological ones. More precisely, I just dont have the motivation to continue to train to compete at a level I feel warrants "Elite" status. When racing as a pro, all that really matters is your performance relative to your peers. This is both awesome and awful at the same time. Awesome because its all about the competition but awful when you're no longer competitive.<br />

When I began racing as a pro in 2007, I knew there were guys who were out of my league at the time, but I had confidence that I had plenty of room for improvement, and it would only be a matter of time before I began to close the gap. After all, I had just finished 13th overall at the 70.3 World Championships while finishing as the first overall non pro, so I relished the chance to compete against the best.<br />

2008, 2009, and 2010, then, were filled with lots hard miles, and some pretty consistent racing. Day after day, week after week, I was planning my next workout, working out, and/or recovering from my previous workout. I had some decent results, including finishing in the middle of the pack of male pros at the 70.3 World Championships in 2009 (49th / 82) and 2010 (25th / 40) (after flatting twice in 2008) but was never really in the mix late in the race to win any 70.3s. In training, I really only saw marginal improvement, at best, in key workouts. <br />

Eventually the grind started to take its toll. Punishing yourself by yourself everyday takes a fair amount of internal motivation. At first, the motivation was abound, as I knew I wasn't that far off from at least being "in the mix". My swim and run were there; I just needed to improve on the bike. Solution? Bike hard, and bike a lot. But, in order for the belief, and therefore motivation, to stay at a high level, I needed to see improvement. Excuses can be made for individual workouts, but when you take a step back and see only marginal gains, it makes you start questioning the bigger picture.<br />

I certainly had some results that plenty of people would be take any day of the week. But sometimes "good" isn't "good enough" especially when it comes to racing as a pro. You either perform to a certain level or you don't, and I began to realize that the only way I would even have the chance to be competitive was if I decided to quit my day job and "fully commit" to triathlon.<br />

While I love triathloning, I also love being a Materials and Processes Engineer for Boeing. Everyday at work I get to help design the Core Stage of the <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/sls/#.Ustm8PRDvz4">Space Launch System</a>, NASA's heavy lift rocket which has the potential to take humans further from Earth than they've ever gone before. We have some really hard problems, and I couldnt imagine giving up on helping to solve them. So while some consider "living the dream" to be quitting their "boring day job" and committing to triathlon, I feel like I am "living the dream" every day when I head into work. <br />

So there it is; its been a fun ride and I am incredibly privileged to have experienced it. I still love triathlon and will certainly still continue to race, as this sport is too much fun. So after taking some down time, I decided to go a slightly different direction and signed up for the <a href="http://runrocketcity.com/">Rocket City Marathon</a>. People always seem surprised when I tell them I've never run a marathon, but training for one doesn't exactly jive so well with triathlon training. So with the race on December 9th, I figured this would the perfect opportunity to set the other two sports on the back-burner for a bit and focus on running for a couple of months. Plus, I have wanted to run a marathon before I get too old...<br />

So, the last six weeks or so I've been slowly ramping up my running while just kind of maintaining swimming and biking. The last six weeks have seen mileage totals on the run of 52, 66, 70, 73, 77, and 81, (all in singles, BTW) while swimming 12-16,000 yds/week and biking 30-70 miles, usually just in one weekend ride. I wanted to take a cautious build, but I'm really pleased with how I'm handling the extra running volume. So after a few aches and pains at the end of September, I haven't had any issues over the last month, even with races three weeks in a row in October. The results of those races weren't spectacular by any means, but I'm keeping my "eyes on the prize", so to speak, and just used them as workouts.<br />

I am pulling back a bit this week for the Huntsville Half Marathon, so that should be a good test of fitness. After that, it'll be full speed ahead to RCM!<br />

As you'll recall, IM Louisville 2012 <a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2012/08/im-lulvull-redux.html">did not go so well</a>. So, I returned this year partially in hopes of a better outcome, but also because I enjoyed the challenging course and awesome finish line.<br />

Heading into the race my plan was to eat a lot on the bike, then try to finally have a decent run. I had to travel more than I wouldve liked in July and August, but never the less thought I'd still be able to improve on my abysmal IM running performances as long as I fueled well enough.<br />
<br />
SWIM<br />
<br />
After a very brief dip in the water, the M and F PROs were off. The start was harder than I had remembered from the previous year, but I was more than happy to let others lead it out. After about 200M though, things settled down and I slowly moved up in the pack. Soon enough, though, I noticed I was up close to the front with the pace only slowing. There was another group slightly ahead on the right, but with a near 160 degree turn up ahead on the left, I had no desire to head right. So, I put in a little surge, and soon enough I was out front. By the turn at ~1300m, I was pretty sure I had a gap on the group. After the turn we got the current with us, so I just kept the buoys on my left shoulder and enjoyed a nice cruise to the finish. Back to back years as the first out of the water was pretty sweet, indeed. It was also pretty cool to see 48:XX on the clock when I exited. Yowza!<br />

Unlike last year, when it almost 30mi for the guys to reel me in, Chris MacDonald had caught me within the first few minutes this year. Apparently he was not satisfied to let Pat E ride away with the win, again. Either way, fine by me. As the guys continued to come by I was just focusing on doing my own thing, and trying to get as many calories down as possible. Thankfully, my Oatmeal Raisin and Chocolate PowerBars were tasting pretty dang good.<br />

Without my PT, I was relying solely on splits on course. This is good in that time is really all that matters, but bad in that you really don't know if you should be going faster or not. My splits were a little slower than I had projected, but again, I wasnt sure if that was just because of the hilly course and poor conditions, or because I just wasnt pedaling hard enough.<br />
<br />
Regardless, after the initial wave of guys passed me, I was out there all alone until the second loop on the "lollipop" where I came up on AGers on the loop #1. While overall I enjoy this course, this section is pretty sketchy. A narrow two lane road is open to traffic, and there are people riding three and four wide. The best parts were when I was passing a BRO just before an uphill, only for him to start CRUSHING it up the hill, only to have me pass him once it leveled out again. Despite numerous close calls, I did make it through lap #2 without any catastrophes. Heading back into town, I really just wanted to get off the bike.<br />

RUN<br />
<br />
After finally finishing up, it was out to the "run". IM runs are always interesting. I felt like death, as usual, in the first mile, but in reality it was a little under 7min. My next two were decent, as well, and I was finally starting to find some type of rhythm. Then, all of the sudden, it happened. The wheels started coming off, and by mile 5 I was seriously doubting whether I'd be able to finish. So already, by that point, I was just trying to keep running (rather than walking). This, by the way, is not a good thing when you still have 20 miles to go :-0. But, I kept running and eventually found a way to "run" 7:50/8:00 min pace, netting a split of 3:24.<br />

POSTMORTEM<br />
So, another IM, another disappointing run split. I realize plenty of people would be really happy to go 9h38 on one of the toughest IM courses out there, but it is just really frustrating to me to see people I have beaten in 70.3s beating me my 20-30 minutes. I've come to the realization, though, that until I can put in at least 12-15h a week of very solid work on the bike, it will be difficult for me to go much faster on the run. In IM, running, it seems, is almost trivial if you dont have the bike miles in your legs.<br />
<br />
On the bright side, this has reinvigorated my passion for racing 70.3s and Olympic distance racing, and I plan to go back to focusing on those for next year. I realize I dont have the time to put in the training necessary to be competitive at IMs, but can at the 70.3 distance. There really is a pretty big difference between 17h a week and 24-28h. As for this year... we'll see. Right now I'm just busy enjoying CFB!</div>

So yes, despite the lack of updates here, I have been racing this year. Unfortunately just not nearly as much as I should be. And in this case, the lack of blogging and lack of racing were pretty much due to the same thing: more working! Well, that and the two IMs on the schedule. Luckily building a rocket doesn't suck all the time, so being really busy at work isn't really a bad thing.<br />
<br />
So, on to the race! Believe it or not this was my first 70.3 in over a year (since <a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2012/05/fl-703-rr-chasing-lance-across-polk.html">FL 70.3 last year</a>), so I was certainly overdue. I was also looking forward to a break from the monotony of IM training. I'm getting ready for IM Louisville (<a href="http://ajhodges.blogspot.com/2012/08/im-lulvull-redux.html">again</a>), so for the last month I've been a full on weekend warrior. This meant the "taper" consisted of limited training the Monday - Friday leading up to the race in conjunction with a trip out to <a href="http://instagram.com/p/cbru8Swa_B/">California for work</a>. Fun times, indeed.<br />

The morning of the race was picturesque, except for the slight wind our of the north, which was only a problem because we were swimming one way... south to north. After a little warmup, I quickly realized I'd be wet longer than usual. It certainly wasn't the choppiest water I've ever swam in, but the chop combined with the current definitely made it slow. When I exited the water, I saw a "29:XX" on my watch and thought I was in big trouble. However, after seeing that I was actually only 2min back from swim stud David Kahn, I wasnt too upset.<br />

The bike, on the other hand, was a different story. An unseasonably cold day in Michigan (low 60s) meant I was chilly from the start and just couldnt get warmed up. Riding into the sun on a chip seal road while getting passed by groups of riders also wasnt fun. However, I was downing gels like it was my job, and finally started feeling better as the ride progressed. I seemed to finally settle into a decent rhythm and managed to not get passed in the last 25 miles or so. So yeah... riding solo as usual.<br />

Out onto the run, and I was finally able to appreciate the beautiful day. I felt considerably better with my legs under me, and set out at a pretty good clip. I quickly settled into 5:50-6min pace and was pleased with my speed relative to effort. The last few miles hurt, and although it felt like I was speeding up, my mile splits indicated otherwise... :-0.<br />
<br />
In the end I finished with 2:20 bike and 1:18 run. Both are certainly pedestrian given the conditions, but I was actually pleased with them considering the lack of taper and recent IM training. Really though, the race reminded me how much fun racing is... I just wish I had time to do more of it!<br />

Heading into this race I felt pretty good, as I had had some solid long rides, and was looking forward to some great weather in PCB. I also had plenty of friends and family at the race, so that was an added bonus.<br />

Without further ado, lets get to the action. The gun sounded and we were off into the Gulf. There were some swells, which made sighting difficult at times, but nothing too terribly bad. The group seemed to split pretty quickly, and soon I found myself swimming alone. I wasnt too worried, though, because I really dont think there is much of an advantage to drafting in the water with the swells as big as they were anyway. The first lap was fine, and I was pleasantly surprised to see 25:xx when I came out of the water the first time.<br />

Across the beach to start lap #2 and all was still well. Coming back on the second lap, though, things got a little dicey, as it was about this time I started swimming through quite a few AGers. The concentration only increased, and pretty soon it was Normandy out there. As I came out of the water, I saw a 53:xx (swim split was 53:30) and feeling great; definitely ready to attack the bike.<br />
<br />
Ahh, the bike. I set out with a pretty simple goal: stay consistent, get in the calories, and break 5h. If I did that, I figured the racing would come later. First split was 25:00. (D@mn this <a href="http://www.quintanarootri.com/">QR </a>is fast!) Then, the pack came. All the usual suspects were there in a group of 12-15, but I wasn't worried. I knew there was nothing I could do, and trying to go with them would've only meant trouble later. So, I rode my race. Following splits were 24:35, 25:48, 24:53, 26:11, 26:43, 26:33, 26:10, 24:59, 26:22, and 31:00 (12 miles). Needless to say, they were pretty consistent. I was especially pleased with how strong I felt at the end of the ride. Finally I made it back to T2, and was elated to see 4:4x on my TIMEX for my bike split.<br />

Starting the run, I was 5h50 into the race, which was right on target. I started off with the typical IM shuffle, and soon settled into 6'30" miles, which I felt was pretty conservative. The first 6 miles were 6:36, 6:32, 7:30 (w/ bathroom break), 6:28, 6:37, and 6:31. I certainly wasnt pushing the pace, but rather just going with it. Then, though, things started deteriorating. From there, the splits went 6:58, 6:47, 6:43, 6:55, 7:04, 7:12, 7:25, 7:32, 7:30, 8:08, 7:53, and 8:18. <br />

During this time, my form started falling apart, and it was everything I could do to keep running the pace I was. Then going into the park, there was a little section of plywood which I caught the edge of, tripped, and felt a little something in my Achilles This forced me to stop and walk, and it was a slow walk at that. I tried to run again, but no dice. So, rather than limping another 2h to the finish, I got a ride to the med tent for an IV and some desperately needed calories.<br />
<br />
Obviously the whole thing was pretty frustrating. Well, not the whole thing. The swim and bike went well, and I was shuffling along just fine on the run through about 10 miles. But none of that really mattered when I blew up like a CHAMPION. Looking back, I probably should've targeted more calories on the bike and the run. I took all that I had planned, but clearly that just wasn't enough. I also need to practice taking calories on the run more, and getting used to running with a flask. I'm bad at drinking out of cups while running, so I think bringing a little bottle along could go a long way.<br />

I'll do another post to wrap up of the season, but going forward, clearly I'm going to need to do at least one more of these crazy races. I think its safe to say that I've been humbled a bit my the distance, as bonking hard core is not fun. So, if I'm going to want to actually do well, I'm going to have to take more calories throughout the race. I ran 16:18 on a cold, windy day for 2nd, and felt pretty good doing it. I certainly wasn't super sharp, but it wasn't too hard of an effort, and I felt OK the next day, so I was perfectly content with how it went. The temperature just took a huge drop here in the 'ville, so I was definitely happy to be out running fast rather than on my bike for 5h.<br />
<br />
Speaking of being on the bike for obnoxiously long periods of time, the last 6 weeks or so have consisted of some pretty solid training, so hopefully that will be evident this weekend. Since IMLou I've had 3 rides >5h plus a century plus a 56mi TT that was ~5W higher than I've ever done in a half IM. And of course outside of the century it has been all solo, all the time. So even the relative loneliness that I typically encounter after the first 30mi should feel like a crowded chicken coop. <br />
<br />
And as for the run? Well, this is IM, and we all know that just comes down to how well you consume calories and pace on the bike. So, if I do both of those well, I think I'll do just fine. Plus, my running buddy <b>George H </b>is training for the Rocket City Marathon, so he's been more than keeping me honest during the long runs.<br />

After a hard week, the weekend was particularly daunting, but thankfully the weather cooperated superbly. It really is so much easier to get out the door for a solo 5h ride when it is 70F and sunny, because you really don't have an excuse not to!<br />

After the sh*tshow that was IM Louisville, I had a pretty bitter taste in my mouth. And, although I was hating life for the last 4h or so of the race, as soon as I finished I knew I needed another race to get some redemption. Conveniently enough, <b>IM Florida</b> is far enough out to allow me to recover and get a bit more training, but (hopefully) not too far that I'll get burned out. So, its on. PCB here I come!!<br />

In the meantime its back to the grind. I kicked training off this past weekend with the AYCE Century on Saturday followed by another long ride on Sunday. If this trend continues, I look forward to becoming intimately familiar with my with my bike seat over the next 5 or so weeks.<br />

So what had happened was......<br />

<b>Swim:</b> The morning of the race I felt nervous but relaxed and ready to race. We got in the water, I warmed up the best I could in 5min, and we were off. I was on someone's feet for a couple of minutes, but then was feeling good and moved out, and all of the sudden was out front. I didn't really accelerate or anything, but started pulling away. From there I pretty much just swam the rest of the way at what I thought was a fast but controlled effort. Honestly, I was surprised to be out front, but hey, its a race! It certainly wasnt a goal, but it was definitely cool coming out of the water first! I just swam at what I thought was race pace, and thats what happened. It turns out I had about 40s on the next guy, after swimming 53:12.<br />

<b>Bike:</b> Out on the ride, I quickly settled into a rhythm and started downing the calories. Finally, Evoe, McDonald, and Gerlach caught and passed me around mile 30, and I let them go. I came through 50 in 2:12, which after doing some rough calculations made me think I was on pace for just under 5h, which is right what I was shooting for.<br />

I missed mile 70, but a bit after that another guy passed me but not very fast, so I kept him in sight. Of course at this time the legs were starting to hurt and it was starting to warm up. I don't recall my split at 80mi, but I remember thinking I was still on pace. Soon after that, though, I heard a recurring thump in my rear wheel. I stopped and sure enough, there was a tack. I didnt worry about it because I wasnt far out of 4th and confident I could still catch the guy on the run that had just passed me. It took me about 6min to make the change. I was back on the road, but 5min or so later I could tell I was losing air. So, I stopped and got a CO2 and added some more air. I started back and soon after heard an explosion. My tire had torn and the strands that make up the lip were exposed. I wish I had a pic. So, without an extra tire, I had to wait for neutral support. Who carries an extra clincher tire?? I probably waited 30-35min. I finally got back into it, but the last 20miles were pretty brutal. I finally finished, and knew that although it would suck, I'd have to do the run.

<b>Run:</b> Coming into T2, I still thought I could have a decent run. Why not? When I started running, though, it was a different story, as my stomach was cramping like a champ. It was so tight that I was having a hard time breathing, let alone getting any fluids down. I made it through the first couple miles around 7min pace, but it was a struggle. I kept expecting to feel better, but nothing was happening. So, I started walking through the aid stations hoping I could get some calories and fluid. Nothing seemed to help. I felt like I wanted to vomit, and I dry heaved a couple of times, but nothing came out. Finally with about 4 miles to go I decided I was going run the rest of the way, which I did.<br />

The last two miles were brutal, and I scored a trip to the med tent at the finish after almost falling on my face. I was dehydrated, but also bonking pretty bad, I think. I got a liter of fluid and drank ~8oz of chicken broth out of a straw, and my stomach finally started settling down.<br />

Obviously it was a pretty disappointing day, but that happens. What it means, though, is that I need some redemption! I'm not sure where or when it will come, but I'll figure that out in the next couple of weeks. In the meantime, its time for a little vacation weekend hiking with friends in the Smoky Mountains, which will be a nice mental and physical break, and should help me get over the disappointment of last weekend. </div>

Other than the despicable time trial start, this race has become one of my favorites for a number of reasons. To the bullets!<br />

<ul>
<li>I get to sleep at home</li>
<li>It comes at a great time of year, as I'm usually pretty fit </li>
<li>Further, August is just an awesome month in general</li>
<li>There are usually plenty of friends there, which makes for a good time post race</li>
<li>It is short... 600m/16.2mi/3mi so it takes just over an hour</li>
<li>The weather has been, surprisingly, pretty good</li>
</ul>
This year was no different, including the shitty TT start. I was "seeded" 5th, although I have no idea how they come up with these placings. I actually enjoy starting back a bit, but I always think its a little strange when I'm starting 5th after having won the race the last two times I started it. Regardless, <b>Bruce G</b> was first. And, if they were going solely on swim times, that was certainly warranted. He may be old, but the man can swim.<br />
<br />
So we went.... after the relays. Nothing like some extra bodies to dodge in the water. After making it around the first turn and past most of the relay swimmers, I tried to find Bruce's yellow cap with the hope of at least having someone to pace off. Coming around the second turn, though, I was suddenly engulfed by a motorboat. A bit shocked, I jumped on the guy's feet and was semi- relieved to see it was Jacob Shults, one of the HS "kids" I used to swim with who now goes to Auburn.<br />
<br />
As I got to my bike, Bruce was on his way out, so I knew he didnt have much time on me, which I was happy about. Out on the bike, I passed Jacob within the first mile and had Bruce in my sights. I caught him around mile 3 and went straight by. Apparently not fast enough, though, because to my surprise he came back by me a few miles later. I think he was just trying to be nice. I let him lead for about a minute, then repassed and rode the rest of the way on my own. I kept waiting/expecting someone to come from behind, but it never happened.<br />
<br />
Its always good to start the run first but............. you never know when it is a TT start! So I took off running. I didnt feel great, so I just wanted to get to the turnaround and assess the damage. At the turn, I saw my closest competitor 1'20 after the turnaround. So, thats 2'40" back. He was number 15, which meant he started, at most, 30" after me. So, that still put me over 2' ahead. It also helped that said competitor was my doctor, Dr. John Krichev. He is a very solid runner, but I knew that as long as I kept running he'd have a hard time making up 2min in only 1.5 miles.<br />
<br />
It was great to see the other competitors heading out as I was heading back, and I was definitely ready for the finish line. I crossed, and stopped my watch. But then I had to run back around to the start to watch the clock, just to make sure my earlier math was correct. It was close enough, and I was pretty confident I had the win. <a href="http://onlineraceresults.com/race/view_plain_text.php?race_id=26984">Results confirm this.</a><br />

Post race gets better every year, as more and more people in and around Huntsville are getting into triathlons. Its pretty cool to see, but I'm just mildly disappointed that this TT style start is the first type of race they get to experience. But it should make the real thing that much better!<br />

During the race I must say I didnt feel great. But, looking at my splits, I had <b>PRs for both the bike AND the run</b> on this course. (I dont bother with the swim, b/c it is always all over the place. But, I was only 13sec behind The Man, which I am not at all disappointed with.) Considering I've done this race in '08, '09, and '10, I was pretty stoked to see the improvement, especially since I did it from the front. Saturday some friends were planning on going out to the river for some fun, so I certainly wanted to join. So clearly the solution was to simply ride to the river. But, because the destination was only about 40 miles away, and I kind of needed a detour via Tennessee:<br />

I was pleasantly surprised with the route, especially Route 273 and 274 up in TN. The trek from Ardmore, AL to Athens on Al 251, on the other hand, was not so much fun. Then the last 8mi on Nuclear Plant Road, was just awful. Rough pavement and huge bumps just arent the way you want to finish 5h+ in the saddle!<br />
<br />
Regardless, 5h 21min and 112miles later, I was finally there. Just a quick 20min run and I was ready for a great afternoon on the river.<br />

At that point the fun was just starting, as the next destination was Tanner High School for a tractor pull!<br />

And so it begins... IM training at least. Sunday included a 101mi ride, which was clearly the highlight of my week. Seriously though, I switched to an <a href="http://www.ismseat.com/saddle/adamo-prologue">ISM Adamo Prologue</a> saddle a couple of months ago and I couldnt be happier with it. Although I had a bit of chafing during the first few weeks, that has subsided and now I have no complaints. I used to get that "burning" sensation you-know-where, but no more. This includes yesterday, when I still didnt have any saddle soreness issues at the end of the ride.<br />

The rest of the week was lower key, as I had to travel to California for a PDR at a supplier. The silver lining, though, was the chance to swim at the <a href="http://www.rosebowlaquatics.com/">Rose Bowl Aquatic Center</a>. There were, however, a couple of factors we forgot to consider. First, the NCF was April 28th, while the MoonPie Festival was June 16th. In April it is still cool in the morning; in June, though, not so much. Next, the race associated with NCF was a 5k, while Moonpie was a 10 miler. I didn't major in math, but 10 miles is a lot longer than 3.1. And really... who puts on a 10 mile race in the middle of the summer in the South?? So with this in mind, some of us were having second thoughts... </div>

The race was... a race. The first few miles were pretty hilly, the next few were flat, and then we got to finish with a nice juicy uphill just after the 9 mile mark. I ended up <a href="http://www.nashvillestriders.com/storage/results/results-2012/Moon%20Pie%202012%20results.txt">5th in 56:45</a>, which is nothing to write home about, but certainly was a pretty decent workout. </div>

Now, enough about racing. The highlight, of course, was the festival! FWIW, I'll give a nod to the Cornbread Festival on food (selection, quality, and quantity), crafts, and overall size. But Moonpie definitely had the better race. Sure, the middle of June isnt the optimal time for a 10 miler, but you dont see the 10 mile distance all that often, so it gets points for that. And this race had close to 850 finishers, which is not too shabby for a race in the Middleofnowhere, TN. Finally, the post race food included fresh buscuits (sausage, chicken, or plain), bananas, muffins, and of course RC Cola and MoonPies. </div>

Things started with a bang last Monday with the 32nd annual <a href="http://whnt.com/2012/05/28/thousands-in-huntsville-for-cotton-row-run/">Cotton Row Run</a> in downtown Huntsville. This is the biggest road race of the year in Huntsville, so its always a lot of fun. However, it is also always hot, humid, and hilly, so its usually a bit of a suffer-fest as well.<br />

I kept things under control and ran 34:40, <a href="http://www.huntsvilletrackclub.org/index2.htm">which was only good enough for 16th place</a>. This race has a pretty substantial prize purse, though, so there were a few "local" Kenyans in town to make some cash.</div>

Saturday, on the other hand, it was my turn to bring home the bacon, as thankfully some of the attributes that help Kenyans run fast, don't exactly help them swim fast. On the line was $1000 for the win in the Coliseum <a href="http://gamultisports.com/rocknrollmanraceseries/">Rock N Rollman Half</a> in Macon, GA. I had won the race last year and was excited to go back to defend my title. </div>

As for the race itself, there isnt much to report, other than it went pretty darn well. I broke away a few minutes into the swim and was able to get a nice gap on the field. </div>

Out on the bike, the QR felt great, but it was difficult to tell just how well I was doing, as the course was windy and hilly and I was riding my <a href="http://www.pro-bikegear.com/publish/content/pro_2010/us_2012/en/index.html">PRO disc</a> (so I didnt have power). I always ride scared, though, so I just put my head down and pedaled hard. As each 5-mile split ticked by, I became more and more confident that no one would catch me.<br />

Sure enough, I came off the bike in first. I finally got a glance at the second place guy as I was about half a mile into my run. I figured I had about 5' on him at that point, so I knew as long as I had a decent run, I'd be able to hold him off. At around mile 4 there was a turnaround and I had him at ~5'30" back, which meant we were probably running about the same pace. I was feeling OK running ~6' miles on the hilly course, so I knew as long as I kept things under control, I'd hold him off. By the second out and back around mile 9, I had close to 6' on him, so at that point I knew I just had to keep running and I'd get the win.<br />
<br />
I ended up finishing in 4:10:09, breaking my course record from last year. Better yet, my bike split was <b>2'57" faster</b> than last year and my run was exactly <b>3'</b> <b>faster</b>. (<a href="http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_results&id=2407">2011 results</a> and <a href="http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_results&id=2942">2012 results</a>, for reference) Now certainly the cooler temps this year helped the faster run split, but I'm really excited about the faster ride. I'd like take all the credit and say it was a gain in fitness, but I'd be remiss not to mention the <a href="http://www.quintanarootri.com/_bike.asp?content=CD0.1%20Frameset">QR CD0.1</a>. That bike is fast!<br />

Up next? Good question. The next big race on the calendar is Ironman Louisville at the end of August. Dumb, I know, but I think its about time I improved on my PR from 2005. In the meantime, there will be plenty of local races, as well as hopefully another 70.3 or two. <br />

It was also my second half ironman distance, and where I qualified for Hawaii way back in 2005. However, this year was like no other. First of all, the race venue had changed with a move from Disney's Fort Wilderness to Lake Eva, in majestic Haines City. I vaguely remember traveling to Haines City for a soccer tournament sometime in the mid 90s, but this was my first time heading there for a triathlon.<br />
<br />
The other big difference in the this year's race was, of course, the Lance effect. Lance, yes that Lance, had committed to this race when he announced his "come back" to triathlon and partnership with WTC, and needless to say it was pretty well publicized.<br />
<br />
The first difference was in the transition area as we were setting up in the morning. I've raced (as a Pro) in the 70.3 World Championships a few times, and there were always a lot of media there. But this is first time I've seen such a huge throng of other racers standing near our section of the transition area. Furthermore, this is first time I can remember our section of the transition area being separated from the rest. Other than being midly amusing, none of this really affected my preparation any, and I went through my pre-race motions without any issues.<br />

Finally, it was game time and we were off. I had a decent enough start, but was still further back than I wouldve liked after 100m. Thankfully though I was able to pass people and slowly made my way up through the pack. The swim was an unusual 'W' shape, and it wasn't until the last straight coming back to shore that I realized I was in a pretty good position. I was in a group with a few others and was pretty sure there werent many others up the water.<br />
<br />
Pretty soon I was tapping the guy's feet in front of me, at which time I looked up and was pretty sure it was Lance. He and another dude made a final sprint for the finish, and I stumbled a bit coming out, causing me to exit the water around 6th in ~25min, only about 1min20 down from the lead.<br />
<br />
Out on the bike there were considerably less spectators and also less racers. My swim group took off immediately, likely chasing Lance. I dont think I couldve caught up with them if I wanted to, but if I had, I wouldnt have been able to hang around for long. So, I was all alone for the ride. It was hard, as finishing into a headwind it always tough, and I finally came off the bike in around 2h20.<br />
<br />
Out on the run the Lance effect was again in full force. There were noticeably more spectators than usual, especially for a course in a small town. But it was funny how many fewer were there for my last loop... I ran right at 26min for the first two loops, but then slacked a bit on the last one and finished in 1h19.<br />

(As an aside, I've been wearing some <a href="http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/?l=shop,pdp,ctr-inline/cid-100701/pid-462759/pgid-580902">Nike Lunarspiders</a> for my track workouts and have really enjoyed them. They are super light and responsive, but I think they're a bit too flimsy for a 70.3 run. That, or I'm just not running fast enough to take full advantage, because they definitely make me run faster on the track!)<br />

So all in all 4:08 in 9th place, which I was pretty pleased with, especially given the lowered training volume this year. This is right in line with recent performances at this race, and I'm really excited for the rest of the summer, as I've only recently started more long course specific training.<br />

Two for one! So needless to say, things at the real job have been a bit busy, and the blogging is slipping. We've got our first big milestone coming up (SRR/SDR), and I've had some artifacts due, and its kind of important we convince NASA we know what we're doing, so those have naturally taken priority. But dont worry, there has been some training as well... <br />

First, a couple of weeks ago I went and ran a 5k at the <a href="http://www.nationalcornbread.com/">National Cornbread Festival</a> in S. Pittsburg, TN. Yes this is real, and yes it is awesome. The course was short (actually only 3mi) but quite hilly, so I was pleased with 15:30 for 3 miles and the win.<br />

After that, it has been about a week and a half of really solid training. I've had some great threshold workouts on the track, and suffered through a couple of long rides on the <a href="http://www.quintanarootri.com/_bike.asp?content=CD0.1%20Ultegra">QR</a>. I also had a great workout with the kids. </div>

Fridays have been LCM at the Nat so that the kids can get ready for the summer. This means, of course, that the kids also have practice in the morning those days. This particular Friday 16x100m, leaving on 2'30", best average. The kicker? These were from a dive, starting in heats. This was a great workout, and I definitely swam faster than I wouldve by myself. The only problem was that by the second half, my arms/back were getting so sore that I was having serious difficulty getting out of the pool...</div>

Or at least had the intention of racing a triathlon but ended up stumbling through a quasi-duathlon.<br />

The New Orleans 70.3 turned into the New Orleans 67.1 when on <i>Saturday </i>the race director decided to cancel the swim due to the <i>forecast</i> of windy conditions on <i>Sunday</i> morning. Other than a few extreme situations (ie an impending hurricane) I'm not aware of a situation where the swim has been canceled that early. When it happens, it is usually a game-time decision. And even then there is usually quite a bit of consternation.<br />
<br />
But, it is what it is and we were left with basically a bike-run event. After all, its not like there was going to be any real separation in two miles among 35 fit guys who have to ride 10m apart. I had a decent opening run, and was on my bike without any issues. That wouldn't last long, though, as things went downhill quickly.<br />
<br />
The details are presented below in list form because I'm in specification writing mode.<br />
<ul>
<li>About a mile (1) into the ride ride my front bottle which was filled with PowerBar Perform, decided it really didn't want to be in the cage anymore, so it flew away. </li>
<li>A Brazilian who I believe mainly does ITU races decided it would be a good idea to ride in our group. He rode like it was an ITU race, so when he finally decided to move to the front preceded to stop pedaling after passing me. I didn't brake quickly enough and there was the draft marshall to give me a 4min penalty, leading to...</li>
<li>4 minutes in the sin box. Never fun, but considerably less so when it is chilly and windy. </li>
<li>Replacement Perform grabbed at the aid station had a leaky cap and was spewing Perform all over my front wheel/frame/body/chain. I got a few swallows and had to dump the rest. </li>
<li>I probably didn't take enough calories, likely leading to a mild blow up the last couple miles of the run (5:45s to 6:15s).</li>
<li>The last mile. There was a bridge, then a large roundabout, then the turn to the finish. We had already been through the roundabout once, after finishing the first lap, so I figured the turn for the finish wasn't too far past it after the completion of lap #2. I was wrong. We had to go back over the bridge then turn right and go through some gravel before finally reaching the anti-climatic finishing straight.</li>

Ouch. It was a pretty busy week, both at "real" work and here in the "other" office. The result was a few really awesome workouts, one day where I got home and fell asleep for an hour and fifteen minutes (oops), and quite a bit of acute soreness. The highlight was, without a doubt the FAST track workout on Tuesday followed immediately by free Ben & Jerry's. Who needs <a href="http://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20100604/chocolate-milk-refuels-muscles-after-workout">chocolate milk</a> when you can have <a href="http://www.benjerry.com/flavors/our-flavors/">New York Super Fudge Chunk</a>??<br />
